Sleep Apnea Treatment in Claremont, NC
Did you know that more than 12 million Americans are affected by sleep apnea? If you are drowsy during the day with no explanation, snore loudly, fall asleep unintentionally during the day, or wake up breathless in the middle of the night, you could be one of them!
Sleep apnea is a serious medical condition in which your breathing stops periodically during sleep. Each time you stop breathing in your sleep, the resulting lack of oxygen alerts your brain, which temporarily wakes you up to restart proper breathing. The constant wake-sleep, wake-sleep cycle prevents those with sleep apnea from achieving deep sleep, resulting in a constant drowsy feeling during the day.
Dr. Christopher Reese is dedicated to building bridges to better health, and this includes providing treatment for sleep apnea. We want to improve our patients’ quality of life and allow them—and their sleep partners—to get a good night’s sleep.
Types of Sleep Apnea
There are three categories of sleep apnea:
- The most common is called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and occurs due to a physical blockage, usually the collapsing of the soft tissue in the back of the throat.
- Less common is central sleep apnea (CSA), in which breathing stops because the muscles involved don't receive the proper signal from the brain.
- Some people suffer from "mixed" or "complex" sleep apnea, which is a combination of OSA and CSA.
Treatment of Sleep Apnea
At our Claremont, NC dental office, Dr. Reese treats patients with mild-to-moderate OSA, and those patients with severe OSA that are C-PAP intolerant. We offer a variety of oral appliances that are designed to advance the lower jaw to open the patient's airway which improves their ability to breathe during sleep and stops their snoring.
Our office has advanced instrumentation that allows us to determine where optimum sleep breathing can occur, and this equipment also helps us to determine the effectiveness of the appliance. Very few dental offices have this type of technology, and we’re proud to offer the Catawba Valley region access to this type of customized sleep apnea treatment.
Dr. Reese has partnered with local Claremont sleep physicians and labs to help make sure our patients with sleep breathing disorders can get the relief they need.
